create and maintain a vacuum, i.e. a pressure condition lower than atmospheric pressure.<\/p>\n<p>To fulfil this purpose, the vacuum pump removes the gas (normally air) contained in the vacuum chamber to which the pump is connected via pipes.<\/p>\n<p>A vacuum pump can be said to be similar to a compressor in that <strong>it carries a fluid in the gaseous phase from a lower pressure to a higher pressure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The difference is essentially that <strong>a compressor works at constant suction pressure, whereas the vacuum pump works at variable (decreasing) suction pressure and
